This fall, academic assistance is available for all ages at the Tuscarawas County Public Library System from English Second Language classes for adults to tutoring services for kindergarten through 5th grade children.
“Adult learners can improve their English language skills through interactive lessons in a relaxed environment at the Main Library,” said Adult and Teen Services Manager Robyn Guedel. “Adults interested in learning English language basics are invited to attend this weekly program on select Tuesdays and Thursdays starting September 10th at 5:30 PM.”
Attendees will work with an encouraging and supportive tutor while learning basic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
In addition to ESL classes, students in kindergarten through 5th grade can meet weekly at the Main Library with certified literacy tutor Lana Schrock, PhD starting Wednesdays, starting September 11th, from 4:30-7:30 PM. Schrock will also host tutoring sessions at the Bolivar Branch on Tuesdays, starting September 17th, from 5:00-7:00 PM.
“Students can work on reading comprehension and literacy skills during their appointments with priority given to ESL students,” said Children’s Services Manager Mary Smrek. “Lana will assist students during 30-minute sessions.”
Smrek said this program is made possible at the Main Library through sponsorship with the Friends of the Library and the Bolivar Branch through sponsorship with the Tuscarawas County Literacy Coalition.
While ESL classes and tutoring appointments are free, space is limited and registration is required for each. To register for ESL classes or to sign up for a tutoring appointment, visit the library’s online event calendar or call the Main Library at 330-364-4474 or the Bolivar Branch at 330-874-2720. The County’s Main Library is located at 121 Fair Ave. NW in New Philadelphia and the Bolivar Branch is located at 455 West Water St in Bolivar.
