2 ] www.tusclibrary.org Director’s Notes From the time I first stepped into a library, I was inspired by the endless books available for me to read. So many choices, so many genres, and so many topics! Without a doubt, the freedom to choose what I read is a freedom I cherish and hold dear as an American. Reading freely and choosing what we want to read is at the center of our society. In the past few years, this freedom has come into question as book challenges and book bans have increased at unprecedented rates across our country. The Office for Intellectual Freedom documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022. This was the highest number of attempted book bans since data about censorship in libraries have been compiled and nearly double the 729 book challenges reported in the prior year. Despite these record-breaking book challenge numbers, polls conducted by the ALA tell us that 71% of Americans, regardless of their political party, believe in the right to read. Libraries share America’s collective belief in the right to read. We believe a library should include a collection of materials depicting various topics, viewpoints, and stories that reflect not only our own experiences but also experiences that could be different from our own. We believe that individual Americans are capable of making their own decisions about what they read and don’t read, and we believe that parents are best suited to guide their own children in what they read. The Tuscarawas County Public Library System celebrates Banned Books Week each fall. This year it will be held Oct 1-7 with the theme Let Freedom Read. I encourage you to celebrate your Freedom to Read by visiting your library and freely choosing a book of interest to you and/or your family. For those who may be interested, our Main Library holds a monthly Banned Book Club. New members are always welcome. See page 12 for dates and book selections. Happy reading, everybody!
