No matter your age, summer is a time for adventure and, at the library, your summer can be filled with adventure without spending any money! By participating in the library’s FREE Summer Reading program you can learn a new skill, travel to far away places, make a new friend who shares common interests, explore a new hobby, and work hard to achieve a personal goal. For kids and teens, the library’s Summer Reading is not only an adventure – it is a lifeline to help students avoid the summer slide. Have you heard of the summer slide? It refers to the fact that when kids and teens stop reading over the summer, they are at risk of entering the next grade level having lost key academic skills from the previous year. The library’s Summer Reading program is a great way for kids and teens to avoid the summer slide by staying engaged in reading and learning over the summer. A recent Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report revealed an increase of the percentage of kids across all ages who report reading zero books during the summer. In that same report, 65% of kids and teens who participated in a Summer Reading program believe that participating in a Summer Reading program prompted them to read more. It makes sense! No matter our age – when we participate in Summer Reading, we have access to limitless books, we can choose what we read and what subjects we explore, and we have library staff who help us find books and who plan engaging programs for us. Wallace said the celebration will be held Thursday, June 13th from 5:30 -7:30 PM and will include lawn games, face painting, balloon animals, crafts, and more. Beginnings … The Bolivar Library was established in 1937 under the leadership of Mary Ellen “Nellie” Oberlin. Eighty-four years ago, in 1940, the village of Bolivar partnered with the County Library to make the library a branch of the Tuscarawas County Public Library System. The library was originally housed on Canal Street – first beside the old Helwick’s IGA, then in the 70s next to the post office. The building next to the post office served as a good home for the library until the mid-90s. At that time, the library had completely outgrown the building, struggling to house its growing collection and to meet the needs of the community. Making a New Building a Reality … It took about three years for the idea of a new library located on Water Street to become a reality. In October 1996, the first meetings of the Bolivar/Lawrence Township Library Building Committee were held to discuss the possibility of a new library. In November 1998, construction was underway and the new building opened to the community in June 1999. The library is located on the property donated as a park to the village by Roy Parks. “The committee that made this beautiful building a reality included community members, library staff, village council members, and township trustees,” said Director Michelle McMorrow Ramsell. “This dedicated group worked to secure funds, acquire grants, and organize fundraisers like bake sales, spaghetti suppers, and memorial brick sales.” Today … Children, teens, adults, and families continue to enjoy the Roy Parks Memorial Library. The property still serves as a park with benches, picnic tables, and shade trees, as well as access to free Wi-Fi. Inside, the community enjoys traditional and digital items, as well as toys, puzzles, computers, and MakerSpace equipment. Community members gather in the public meeting space as well as attend storytimes, book clubs, LEGO® club, and arts/crafts programs. “When we celebrate our building’s birthday in June, we will be celebrating all that this building has meant to the community through the years,” said Wallace. Weis completed The Calendar Year Triple Crown (hiking the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail in the same year) an achievement considered rare, likened to walking on the moon. Enjoy the free-roaming poultry on the farm as the gardener shares her knowledge on forest gardening, permaculture, and livestock integration. Little Acorns Greenhouse and Nursery — This family-owned business in Port Washington offers numerous greenhouse flowers, vegetables, hanging baskets, containers, and more. The multi-season landscape surrounding the home and business includes water, vegetable, and wildflower gardens, as well as bird-friendly features throughout the property. Olive Hill Homestead — Travel down a dirt road to this property in Newcomerstown to see this 4,000-square-foot vegetable garden. The edible landscape includes peas, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, potatoes and more. Radharc Ranch — Follow the gravel road to explore the diverse vegetable gardens with flowers and herbs scattered throughout this ranch located in Port Washington. The Gardens of Soil & Substance — Explore this garden in New Philadelphia which showcases the joys of both an artist’s heart and a gardener’s wonder. Meander down “Bloomington Avenue” to experience seasonal pockets of bright perennial, tropical, and annual color. Make a turn along the Twisted Willow -natural fence row in training- and pass the raised beds on “Blackberry Lane” for a glimpse over the berries and into the veggie plot. Along the way be sure to notice the hand dug pathways, colorful containers, frugal and home-crafted trellises, and thrifted treasures throughout. Notes for a pleasant tour: 1. Tickets are available for purchase at our five TCPL locations: Main Library in New Philadelphia, Bolivar, Strasburg, Sugarcreek, and Tuscarawas. 2. Once you have your ticket, keep it with you throughout the tour. You will be required to present it upon entry at each garden. 3. Addresses for each garden can be found on the back of your ticket. 4. You may tour the sites in any order you choose, and we hope you stick around to enjoy the wonderful restaurants in the area. 5. Start early so you can visit all of the sites. 6. Please wear shoes you can walk in safely and comfortably. Touring the gardens will involve walking and may involve uneven ground.
